Numeracy

At Addington School we place emphasis on Numeracy teaching in our Mathematics and Statistics programmes. It is expected that Room 9 will be taught at least 70% Numeracy in their programme.
Our Mathematics and Statistics programme gives priority to numeracy and key competency formation.
• Maths is to be taught for a minimum 45 minutes for 4 days each week.
• Knowledge, skills, strategies, maintenance and reflection are all a regular part of the programme.
• Guided and independent activities are developed through the use of group boxes, which have relevant focussed material at the appropriate level.
• Remedial and extension programmes are put in place as necessary.
Numeracy teaching is aligned with the NZ Numeracy Project, which deals with understanding of numbers and their application in mathematical problem solving. Mathematical knowledge (often referred to as "strand" math) also forms a crucial part of teaching and learning, and is taught alongside the number-based project in the specific areas of Number & Algebra, Geometry & Measurement and Statistics. These are also complemented by ongoing weekly basic facts practice.
There are two main sections to the Numeracy Project Framework:
Strategy
This describes the mental processes students use to estimate answers and solve operational problems with numbers.
Knowledge
This describes the key items of knowledge that students need to learn.
It's important that students make progress in both sections of the framework. Strong knowledge is essential for students to broaden their strategies across a full range of numbers, and knowledge is often an essential prerequisite for the development of more advanced strategies.

Basic facts are emphasised in Room 9 to assist the children with automatic recall of number problems. At present your child is practising their addition/ subtraction and multiplication/ division facts.

The following link will help you support your child with their learning.
